John 17:1-26
Jesus Prays for Me!

Jesus prays for three simple things.

He prays for Himself. He prays for His disciples, Then Jesus prays for His Church, The Body of Christ

We also see several themes to His prayer: The theme of God’s Glory, the theme of our Security, the theme of our Growth, the theme of our Unity.

“After Jesus said this, He looked toward heaven and prayed...” John 17:1a

After He said, “My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives…

After He said, “I’m the vine and you’re the branches.”

After He said, “Love one another as I have loved you.”

There are Four specific ways that we’re the answer to Jesus’ prayer.

1. When God is Getting the Glory.“Father, the time has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You.” v.1b

To be Glorified means to make manifest hidden values and hidden riches.

Three incredible things about Jesus’ glory:

  1. wants to show His glory to us throughout all eternity.

He also wants to show His glory through us.

He shows His glory for us on the cross.

“I have brought You glory on earth by completing the work You gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” v. 4-5

“For You granted Him authority over all people that He might give eternal life to all those You have given Him.” v. 2

Eternal life is: Not how long you live, or just about how you live. It’s really who you live for.

“Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.” v. 3

“I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me, and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me, and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.” vs. 6-10

2. When we are Living in Security.

“I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of Your name – the name you gave me – so that they may be one as we are one. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name You gave Me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction. So that scripture would be fulfilled. I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.” vs. 11-13

Jesus said: “I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

“I have given them Your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.” vs. 14-15

He protects us from the world. He also protects us from Satan.

3. When we are Growing in Maturity.

“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify Myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.” vs. 17-19

  1. I’m sanctified by God’s Truth.

B. I’m also sanctified by Jesus’ Sacrifice.

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message. That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” vs. 20-21

Jesus said; I pray for those who will believe in Me. “That all of them may be one.”

4. When we are United as One

"The cause of Christian unity at the present time and through all history has been injured and hindered because men love their own ecclesiastical organization and their own creed, and their own ritual more than they love each other.” (William Barclay)

“I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

“Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, and to see My glory, the glory you have given Me because You loved Me before the creation of the world.” vs. 22-24

Christians can know that they’re going to heaven because of the price that Jesus paid, the promise that Jesus made and the prayer that Jesus prayed.

The price He paid:God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that we could have eternal life.” John 3:16

The promise He made: “In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it weren’t so I would have told you. I’m going to go there and I’m going to prepare a place for you.” John 14

The prayer that He prayed.I want them to be with Me. I want them to see My glory.” That’s the ultimate joy of the unity that God’s given to us.

“But we know that when Christ comes again we will be like Him because we shall see Him exactly as He is.” 1st John 3:2

“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” vs. 25-26

The question is Am I doing what God gave me to do?

What’s at stake?
