Phil. 2:20-29
Subject
God's Models for Manhood
Description

There are four kinds of people being promoted as men that aren’t very Godly masculine role models.

The Macho Maniac. They deny all their feelings and your feelings too.

This is a Dirty Harry, Rambo, Diehard and Robocop 2 type of guy!

B. The Great Pretender. This is the Archie Bunker type man who builds up his self-worth by constantly belittling someone else especially his wife and his family.

C. The World Class Wimp. This is the Dagwood Bumstead type of person who is so inept he’s constantly outwitted by his children, his wife and even his dog.

D. The Gender Blender. This is the Michael Jacksons, the Boy George, Prince. They don’t even try to pretend to be masculine.

The way you determine a persons’ greatness is by the wealth of their Values.

Paul says of Timothy: “I have no one else like him.” Phil. 2:20

Of Epaphroditus he says: “Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him” Phil. 2:29

These are some of the characteristics we hope to see in all of God’s great men.

1. God is looking for men of COMPASSION. Men who put relationships before results.

“I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.” Phil. 2:20-21

Jesus asks? “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” Mark 8:36

2. God is looking for men of CONSISTENCY. Men who put character before conformity.

“But you know Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has served with me in the work of the gospel.” Philippians 2:22

3. God is looking for men of CONVICTION. An opinion is something you’ll argue. A conviction is something you’ll die for.

“Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.” Proverbs 10:9

Gods interested more in your integrity, than in your image because it’s your character that lasts a lifetime.

4. God is looking for men of COOPERATION. Men who put cooperation before competition.

We need to move beyond the “ invented here” (I deserve the credit) syndrome.

“But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier…” Phil. 2:25.

A. The Church is a Family. “my brother”

It can only become your family when you choose to get involved and when you choose to develop those relationships where you can have an extended family.

The Church is a Fellowship. “fellow worker” We’re given the same task, the same mission. “fellow soldier”. We’re in this Battle together. You don’t have to fight alone.

“So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, united together as one man.” Judges 20:11

5. God is looking for men of COMMITMENT. Men who put the cause of Christ before personal comfort.

“…who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.” Phil. 2:25

“…You heard he was ill and almost died. But God had mercy on him...” V.27

He was persistent despite his pain. Ministry very often costs and exhausts.

“…Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:17

6. God is looking for men of COURAGE. Men who put service before security.

“Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him, because he almost died for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up for the help you could not give me.” Phil. 2:29-30

“Is my commitment to Christ deep enough to cause me to risk anything, possibly everything?”

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” Romans 12:1-2

What am I offering to God? Who I owe everything to?”

“Those who want to save their lives will give up true life. But those who give up their lives for me and for the Good News will have true life.” Mark 8:35

God meant for me to use my time, talents, gifts, and energy to serve him.

“For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him...” 2 Chronicles 16:9

None of us are there yet! What counts is not where we’ve been but where we’re headed.
