John 15:12-17
Subject
Responding to Rejection Rightly
Description

“To live above with saints we love, oh, that will be glory.

To live below with saints, we know… well, that’s another story.”

“My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit – fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. This is my command: Love each other.” Verses 15: 12-17

“Do not conform any longer with the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to attest and approve what God’s will is, His good and pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

“Don’t love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything that is in the world the cravings of the sinful man, the lust of the eye, the boasting of what he has and does is going to pass away. But the who does the will of God is going to last forever.” 1 John 2:15 & 17

“If the world hates you, keep in mind it hated me first” John 15:18

What does that actually mean?

Discrimination. Opposition. Persecution.

1. Don’t take it Personally.

If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” v. 19

“In the past, you wasted too much time doing what non believes enjoy. We were guilty of sexual sins, evil desires, drunkenness, wild and drunken parties, hateful idol worship. Non-believers think it strange that you don’t follow the many wild and wasteful things that they do and so they insult you. But they’ll have to explain this to God. He is ready to judge the living and the dead.” 1 Peter 4:3-5

2. Don’t try to Fit in.

Holy literally means Different and Separate. Because we’re holy. We are Different by Definition as believers.

“Remember the words that I said to you. No servant is greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed My teaching, they will obey yours also.” v. 20

3. Don’t try to Avoid rejection.

4. Rejection is not Universal.

We either attract or repel others depending on what’s in a person’s heart !

We have Christian brothers and sisters all over the world who are facing constant active persecution. What can we do for them?

A. We can pray. B. We can learn. C. We can give. D. We can speak out.

5. When persecution happens respond with Compassion.

They will treat you this way because of My name for they don’t know the one who sent Me.” v. 21

How did Jesus treat His persecutors from the cross? “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they’re doing.” Luke 23:34

“If I had not come and spoken with then they would not be guilty of sin. Now however they have no excuse for their sin.” v. 22

The word “excuse” is literally the word for cloak.

“He who hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.” vs. 23-24

6. Don’t look for the Reason.

But This is to fulfill what is written in their law. They hated Me without a reason.” v. 25

Because it’s not a difference of opinion. It’s a difference in our natures.

As believers we have Totally different authorities in our life.

  1. When I face persecution I Trust in the Holy Spirit.

“When the counselor comes whom, I will send from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, He will testify about Me.” v. 26

  1. I must tell the Truth about Jesus.

“You also must testify for you have been with Me from the beginning.” v. 27

Must testify” is an imperative, It is a command. Times of great persecution are also times of great proclamation.

“All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.” 16:1

9. I won’t go Astray.

“They will put you out of the synagogue [the church]; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or Me. I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.” vs.16:2-4
