Using our Spiritual Gifts in the World

Exodus 31:1-11; 35:4-19; 35:30-36:7

The people of Israel were rescued from slavery in Egypt then had been given a covenant and law at Mount Sinai, they were now instructed to build a tent meeting place for God to dwell with the people continuously. Bezalel and Oholiab give us a very practical and important perspective on the Spirit's gifts for work in the world.

  1. What manifestations of the Spirit were evident in Bezalel’s life?
  2. What special gift(s) did Oholiab bring to the task of building the Tent?
  3. Why do you think it might be important to have a Spirit-gift for work(even secular work) and not just filling of the Spirit for worship services or pastoral ministry?
  4. Chapter 35 testates the process of building the tent after Israel committed the sin of idolatry. How did all the people contribute to building the meeting place with God?
  5. In Exodus 35:30-36:7. What additional gift(s) did God give both Bezalel and Oholiab

Why is this gift important for the work that needs to be done?

  1. What do we learn about the Spirit’s gifting for our work from these two lead craftsmen and the importance of others to be involved in the project(36:2)?
  2. There are three dimensions in discerning giftedness: divine initiative(called by name, 31:2); heart desire(willing to do the work, 36:2); recognition by the community (36:2).
  3. Bezalel is described as “filled with the Spirit”, many others also received the Spirit in various manners for special service. Before Christ, the Spirit’s gi9ft was temporary, occasional and selective. Under the new covenant, the Holy Spirits’s presence is permanent, continuous and universal for all believers.

Why do you think so many Christian’s today function in the church and world as though we were still under the older covenant?

What difference does it make to you to know that the Spirit empowers all believers for serving God and our neighbors?

  1. What can we learn from the example of Bezalel and Oholiab that can be applied to your life and in the work world today?
