The Use of Spiritual Gifts in Witnessing

The Use of Spiritual Gifts in Witnessing

Acts 2:1-12, 13-21 & 36-47

  1. Describe what the gathered believers heard, saw and witnessed on that day.
  2. What was the effect on this international gathering of people and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on these believers?

What temporary conclusion did some draw?

What explanation does Peter give?

  1. Have you ever thought that a spiritual manifestation was a mater of intoxication, either chemical or emotional?

What would have convinced you that the manifestation was a genuine Gift of the Spirit?

  1. Peter, quoting the Old Testament prophet Joel, claims that the “last days” are here, with the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. What difference did it make for that first generation of Christians to know that they were in the “last days”?

What difference does it make for us now, many centuries after the day of Pentecost?

  1. Which spiritual gifts are especially associated with these “last days” (vs. 17-18)

Who receives these gifts?

  1. After quoting Joel, Peter promises that whomever turns to the Lord will be saved (v. 21). He preaches a sermon that tells the story of Jesus (vs. 22-36)

What is the response of the people? Read Acts 2:37-47.

What is the scope of “what my Father has promised” (Luke 24:49) and “the promise” (Acts 2:39 also 1:4,8) What is really the primary reason we receive the Holy Spirit?

  1. What do we learn from this critical incident about the ministry of evangelism?
  2. What have you learned from this study about the role of spiritual gifts in witnessing?
  3. Describe the community as it was enlarged on the day of Pentecost. Consider their common life, their experience of spiritual gifts, their worship, their relation to the apostles and the apostles’ teaching, and their outreach.
  4. What are some New things you have learned about the purpose and place of spiritual gifts?
