John 13:1-17
Jesus Shows Us a Servants Heart

John Chapters 13-17 are all about how to have an abundant life.

Two powerful lessons in this chapter.

1.  Jesus Served them because He Loved them!
It was just before the Passover feast.  Jesus knew that the time had come for Him to leave this world and go to the Father.  Having loved His own who were in the world, He now shows them the full extent of His love.  John 13:1

Without love service is merely duty.
Without love service will sometimes sour into bitterness.
Godly servants know the motivating power that brings joy in life is Love.

“The evening meal was being served and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Jesus.  Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that he had come from God and that He was returning to God; so, He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist.”  vs. 2-4

2.  Godly Servants are Strong.

It takes genuine strength of mind, genuine faith, genuine character.

A.  Jesus had strong Direction.
Godly Servants have an internal spiritual compass that shows them the direction.

B.  Jesus had strong Authority.
Godly Servants know that God is in control of all situations and circumstances.

C.  Jesus had a strong Identity.
Godly Servants know where their authority comes from, and they are secure in it!

“After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.” v. 5

Godly Servants are strong they serve out of that strength.  Spiritual strength.

3. Godly Servants serve Imperfect people.

Think about what that really means.
Do you ever wonder when and how Jesus appeals to you?
Do you ever think about; How easily we give up on other people?

“He came to Simon Peter, who said to him “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?” v. 6

Jesus replied, “’You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.’  No, said Peter.  ‘You shall never wash my feet.’  Jesus answered, ‘Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.’  ‘Then Lord,’ Simon Peter replied, not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!’”  vs.7-9

“Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean.  And you are clean though not every one of you.” For He knew who was going to betray him, and that is why he said not everyone was clean.” vs. 10-11

The disciples were ready to fight for a throne but not for a towel.

Godly Servants are to serve All kinds of people.
God may be calling you to serve those who just don’t understand the Christian life.  Like Simon Peter.

God may be calling you to serve those who would betray you.

Like Judas

God may be calling you to serve those who are still struggling with their faith.
Like Jesus’ disciples

4.  Godly Servants aren’t Showy.

The Greek word for “humility” means to stoop low. Humility by definition can’t be showy. You can’t achieve humility. But You can grow into Humility.

“When He had finished washing their feet, He put on His clothes and returned to His place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” He asked them. “You call Me ‘ teacher’ and ‘Lord’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.” vs. 12-13

Humility is also not denying who you are.

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I Have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.  I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” vs. 14-17

No matter how great or important you think you are.
You’re not greater or more important than Jesus.

No matter how low or unimportant you think the other person is.
They’re not lower than Judas.

Jesus says, this is the example to do for one another.

Doing those things for one another will make you feel loved, supported, and strengthened?
