Central Passage
John 15:1-11
Subject
Keys to Living the Christian Life
Description

Jesus has a word for a satisfying, significant life it is “fruitful.

“I am the true vine and My Father is the gardener.” John 15:1

“I planted you as a special vine as a very good seed. How then did you turn into a wild vine that grows bad fruit.” Jer. 2:21

“How prosperous Israel is. A luxurious vine filled with fruit. But the more wealth I give her the more she pours it on the altars of the heathen gods.” Hosea 10:1

Jesus said, “I am the source of life. I’m the true vine.”

“God cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit. While every branch in Me that does bear fruit, He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 15:2

I am the Branch.

It’s a good comparison to us. God’s the one who gives the care.

God’s the one who tends our lives.

I have to stay attached to the vine. I’m dependent on the vine.

The gardener cuts off and cuts back what is not producing or is dead

2. I will be Pruned.

A. Pruning is Unavoidable and Necessary for new fruit.

It’s all about, the fruit of Christ’s likeness in my life.

  1. B. The Father has only Reason for pruning.
  2. says His goal is the fruitfulness of my life.

C. Pruning Hurts.

It’s very humbling to be pruned.

D. There’s no pruning without Pain.

In midst of our pain there’s the promise of more fruit.

“You are already clean [the same word for pruning] because of the word I have spoken to you.” v.3

3. I must Abide in Jesus Christ.

Abide in Me. Remain in Me. Trust in Me. Stay 100% attached to Me.

“Remain in Me and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself: it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. v.4

Abiding is both Active and Passive.

It takes Discipline in my life and Dependence upon Christ.

“I am the vine; and you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” v.5

“If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.” v.6

My job in this world is to abide in the vine.

“If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be given you. This is to My Father’s glory that you bear much fruit showing yourselves to be My disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.” vs. 7-9

4. Jesus Words abide in me.

Our Prayer and His promise are always linked together.

“If you obey My commands you will remain in My love just as I have obeyed My Father’s commands and so remain in His love.” v. 10

5. I will abide in Jesus Love.

Jesus obeyed God the Father within the relationship of trust.

“I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” v. 11

6. Jesus Joy abides in me.

“Let’s fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning at shame and sat down on the right hand of the throne of God.” Heb. 12:2
