Conquering Temptation & Sin
Conquering Temptation & Sin
Text: Genesis 3:1-6
Title: Conquering Temptation And Sin
Let us conquer temptation and sin by knowing how temptation and sin attacks us.
The Stages of Temptation and Sin:
1.THE FIRST STAGE: EXPOSING OURSELVES TO TEMPTING THOUGHTS (verse 1)
“Now the snake was the most clever of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day the snake said to the woman, “did God really say must not eat fruit from the tree in the garden?”
Several striking things about Eve and the temptation that attacked her:
1. Eve was alone.
2.Eve was where she did not belong.
3.Eve was apparently thinking about the tree and its delicious looking fruit.
4.Eve was not keeping a watchful eye against temptation.
2.SECOND STAGE: DISCUSSING THE TEMPTING THOUGHTS (Verses 2-3)
“The woman answered the snake, “we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden. But God told us you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. You must not even touch it, or you will die.”
Eve did three things:
a. Eve entertained and discussed the tempting thoughts.
b. Eve began to feel that God's command was too strict and restrictive.
c. Eve began to think about the consequence of the sin.
3.THIRD STAGE: DOUBTING GOD’S WORD. (verse 4)
“But the snake said to the woman, “You will not die.”
Remember these:
1. God's warning about sin and its consequences stand.
Sowing and Reaping principle?
1.You reap of the same kind.
2. You reap more than you sow.
3. You reap in due season.
2. The declaration of God's Word and of God's Son is clear: the choice is ours.
"I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins" (John 8:24).
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23).
4.FORTH STAGE: PERSONAL FULLFILMENT (verse 5)
Satan said, “God knows that if you eat the fruit from that tree, you will learn good and evil and you will be like God!”
Four thoughts that we need to keep away our minds from:
1. Thought that the temptation will meet our needs more than what God has given us.
2. Thought that we will never know if we don't experience it.
3. Thought of position, power, strength, self-sufficiency, independence.
4. Thought that we can know good and evil.
5. FIFTH STAGE: LOOKING AND DESIRING AND LUSTING (verse 6)
“The woman saw that the tree was beautiful, that its fruit was good to eat, and that it would make her wise..”
3 things that shows Eve lusted after the forbidden tree:
1. Eve's eyes lusted after the tree. “The tree was beautiful.”
2.Eve's flesh lusted after the tree. “Was good for food.”
3. Eve lusted after the pride of life. “It would make her wise.”
She saw that the tree was desirable for gaining knowledge, experience, and wisdom.
6. SIXTH STAGE: COMITTING THE SIN (Verse 6)
“So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of the fruit to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.”
Eve reached up and took the forbidden fruit and ate it. Eve...
• disobeyed God's Word.
• rebelled against God's Word.
• ignored God's Word.
• rejected God's Word.
• acted against God's Word.
• opposed God's Word.
• took a stand against God's Word.
1 Corinthians 10:13
13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
